As your councilman, Jeff sponsored legislation placing restrictions on the placement of pawnshops, thrift stores, and check cashing operations in unincorporated St. Louis County. Jeff was also the driving force behind St. Louis County's effort of proactive code enforcement to maintain our property values. Thanks to Jeff's leadership, efforts are being made to spur new investment in Lemay and our older suburban areas.
Jeff understands that the economic future of South County, including its school and fire districts, rests on its ability to promote strong, sensible economic development that does not intrude upon residential areas. Jeff also believes that citizens should have a voice in the process. That is why Jeff called for a citizen review of the Oakville Study of 1989 and an unprecedented planning and zoning study for the entire 6th Council district known as the 6th District Community Area Study. This citizen review assures that citizens, not developers, bureaucrats, or politicians, decide the future growth of our community.
Because South County is mostly unincorporated, Jeff felt it was essential
to have someone working full-time to bring sensible economic growth
to the community and help existing businesses prosper and expand.
This proactive approach to economic development is designed to expand
our commercial tax base so South County's economy can be financially
sound through the 21st century. The St. Louis County Economic Council
agreed and in 2000 the first South County Economic Development Specialist
was assigned to South County. Jeff introduced legislation that allows citizens to pay their real estate taxes in quarterly payments or by credit card, helping many seniors on fixed incomes manage their bills, and alleviates some of the burden and hassle of paying property taxes.
Jeff organized the first annual "JB Blast" fireworks display and Fourth of July celebration that is held in Jefferson Barracks Park. Nearly 25,000 people attend the event. The event is privately funded by South County businesses and is an excellent example of community spirit. |
